Segment Sugar

AGRANA Zucker GmbH holds the group's interests in all sugar subsidiaries and is responsible for their coordination and operational management.

AGRANA Sugar is present with 12 production sites (9 sugar factories and 3 food production facilities) in five EU member-states (Austria, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary and Romania) and is one of the leading sugar companies in Central Europe.

These countries are also the territories in which AGRANA has significant market shares.

Following the reform of the European Union’s sugar market regime, sugar exports from the EU are now only subject to special restrictions. In order to continue supplies to the Balkan region in future, AGRANA is constructing a raw sugar refinery together with its long-standing distribution partner SCO Studen & Co Holding in Brcko, Bosnia-Herzegovina. This sugar refinery is scheduled to enter operation at the end of 2007. The production capacity will be 150,000 tonnes of sugar per year.

The accession of Bulgaria to the EU has opened up a new market for AGRANA with potential sales of sugar totaling around 260,000 tonnes per year. In order to be able to tap into this market, AGRANA has founded AGRANA Trading EOOD, with registered offices in Sofia, and entered into a packaging and distribution joint venture known as AGRANA BULGARIA AD with the Bulgarian sugar company Zaharni Zavodi AD.

AGRANA sugar products are sold

  • via retail outlets to end consumers, and
  • to re-processing industries (such as the soft drinks industry, the confectionary industry, fermentation industry and other branches of the food industry
