Social Responsibility

"Human society is like an arch, kept from falling by the mutual pressure of its parts"
(Lucius Annaeus Seneca)

AGRANA is an internationally active processor of agricultural commodities for whom a sustainable approach to natural resources is a leading priority. Sustainable growth is an integral element of AGRANA's corporate philosophy and a key underlying principle of our daily operational business. For AGRANA, sustainability does not only mean efforts to bring commercial and ecological interests into line with each other; it also includes corporate social responsibility. In accordance with the principles of modern corporate social responsibility (CSR) and as a key industrial player in Central Europe with a global presence, AGRANA aims to live up to its social responsibility as far as and wherever possible.

In the course of its commercial activities, AGRANA has defined a Code of Conduct valid group-wide that is based on internationally recognised standards and which addresses issues such as avoiding child and forced labour, all forms of discrimination and which safeguards occupational health and safety.

In addition, AGRANA has also committed to respect all relevant existing industry standards of conduct. For many years, this has required all of the social partners of the European sugar industry to adhere to a common Code of Conduct in terms of social development and upholding basic human rights. The European starch industry has also adopted a policy on the efficient use of natural and renewable resources as well as the promotion of sustainable development.

A variety of different codes are applied in the Fruit segment. In the fruit juice concentrate division, the SGF/IRMA Code of Conduct is regarded as an important step in the direction of implementing sustainable and ethical standards in the international fruit juice industry.

Sustainable development and corporate responsibility in commercial and ecological matters as well as social responsibility also constitute the principles of SEDEX (Supplier Ethical Data Exchange) to which AGRANA acceded in 2009. SEDEX is an organisation of companies which have committed to strive for continuous improvement in their social-ethical behaviour and which promote this along their supply chains. AGRANA's membership is in line with the company's objective of offering customers maximum transparency in terms of corporate social responsibility.

Furthermore, with effect from 21 June 2010, AGRANA has also been included in the Austrian Sustainability Index (VÖNIX). This share index includes 22 of Austria's 60 publically listed companies seen as leaders in terms of their social and ecological performance.

In general, AGRANA's commitment and active social responsibility is focussed on the following areas:
