Magyar Cukor Zrt., a member of the AGRANA group, confirms its strategy to maintain its Hungarian beet sugar production in the long term.

In 2008, sugar beet purchased by Magyar Cukor Zrt. will be subject to € 6.6/t EU community beet aid and € 4/t national aid. Sugar production will be centralised in the only remaining Hungarian plant in Kaposvár. Its capacity will be stabilised in order to produce the company’s sugar quota of 105,000 tonnes.

AGRANA has made the Kaposvár plant more competitive by increasing its beet processing capacity from 5,000 to 7,000 tons in recent last years. Furthermore, the plant has been made partially independent of natural gas through the installation of a biogas plant operating on beet pulp.

AGRANA has been operating in the sugar, starch / ethanol and fruit sectors of the Hungarian agri-food industry for almost 20 years. Under the brand name “Koronás”, AGRANA offers a variety of high quality products based on Hungarian sugar for consumers and industrial sugar users.
