AGRANA, the Austrian market leader in sugar, repudiates the recent claims by the Labour Association that Austrian sugar prices have risen especially strongly in the past several months compared to other countries.

In fact, retail sugar prices have eased slightly over the last five years. Thus, according to independent market research firm AC Nielsen, the average cost of one kilogram of fine granulated sugar was EUR 1.10 in 2003, but only EUR 1.04 in 2007. Retail prices for all other types of sugar have also slightly declined or remained the same over the last five years.
