Betaine is a multifunctional nutrient supporting important metabolic functions. Betaine, also known as trimethylglycine, is a zwitterionic (neutral molecule with bipolar structure) quaternary ammonium compound with the chemical formula (CH3) 3N + CH2COO-. First discovered in the juice of sugar beets (Beta vulgaris), betaine occurs in many other plants (spinach, wheat, broccoli), animals (shrimps, shellfish, crabs) and microorganisms.

  • As an organic osmolyte, betaine confers protection against cell stress; it restores and maintains cellular integrity and functionality, and prevents dehydration, especially in hot climatic conditions. 
  • As a methyl group donor, betaine provides methyl groups for the synthesis of numerous substances, intermediates in protein, fat and energy metabolism, and is involved in DNA methylation. 
  • Furthermore, betaine is utilised with high efficiency in fermentation processes in order to increase the output of the final product.

Generating betaine from sugarbeet is an exciting procedure, pre-supported by the sugar production and molasses desugarization, to finally derive high quality, crystalline betaine for cosmetic, feed and food sector.

Production

The crystalline betaine is produced at the new build crystallisation plant next to the sugar refinery in Tulln in Austria under a joint venture (Beta Pura GmbH) between AGRANA and US-based Amalgamated Sugar. In every production step we pay special attention to be able to generate high quality betaine for cosmetic, feed and food sector.
