CATIONAMYL

Modified starch ethers for wet-end retention and improved paper properties

CATIONAMYL is a range of cationic starches developed for paper-industry wet-end applications. Formulated to be activated with hot water, the range improves retention of starch, fibre and filler while supporting required strength and formation properties across containerboard and specialty paper processes.

Key benefits

  • Improves retention of starch, fibre and filler in the wet end, reducing raw material losses.
  • Enhances physical properties of paper and board by supporting dry strength and sheet integrity.
  • Hot-water soluble, enabling reliable activation and consistent process dosing in wet-end systems.

CATIONAMYL variants are added in the wet passage to increase retention of starch, fibre and filler, which improves yield and reduces raw-material discharge to effluent.

Retention, charge balance and paper properties explained

Cationic starches like CATIONAMYL act primarily through electrostatic interaction: positively charged polymer chains neutralize anionic surfaces on fibers and fillers, promoting flocculation and anchor-point formation that increases retention. This charge-mediated mechanism supports higher filler loadings and improved dry strength without large changes to furnish rheology.

Because CATIONAMYL grades are ether-modified and hot-water soluble, they offer predictable activation and dosing in the wet end; selecting the correct grade and addition point ensures compatibility with retention aids and charge-management programs and minimises undesired flocculation or formation defects.
