AGRANA's raw materials for starch
AGRANA stands for starch products of the highest quality. The raw materials are maize, potatoes and wheat sourced from sustainable European agriculture, a significant proportion of which is procured through contract farming. Raw materials from organic farming are becoming increasingly important in our procurement portfolio.
AGRANA’s team of qualified advisers maintains close contact with farmers and provides them with advice and practical support. Information and training events are also part of AGRANA’s agricultural service.
Corn for starch processing at the Aschach site is processed all year round. During the harvest season from September to November, wet corn is processed directly from the field. Following the so-called ‘wet corn campaign’, commercially available corn is processed, which must be dried prior to storage. Dried corn is sourced through private and co-operative traders, whilst wet corn is predominantly contracted directly from farmers near the factory.
Corn is also processed at the Pischelsdorf site, where, alongside feed wheat, it is used to produce bioethanol for blending with petrol.

Waxy corn differs from conventional corn in its altered starch composition, which has been achieved through selective breeding. Waxy corn and organic corn are sourced either through cultivation contracts directly with growers or via private or co-operative agricultural traders.

Growing specialty corn varieties is a lucrative alternative for farmers. As a reliable contractual partner, AGRANA guarantees to purchase the crop from its contract farmers. Wheat is normally sown in October, with the harvest usually taking place in July of the following year. Starch-rich milling or feed wheat varieties with a protein content of 11 to 12.5 per cent are suitable for bioethanol or wheat starch production. In Austria, average yields range between 5 and 6 tonnes of wheat per hectare. Through so-called ‘ethanol grain contracts’, the Pischelsdorf plant sources wheat via local agricultural traders for starch production, as well as triticale for ethanol production.

Gmünd is home to Austria’s only potato starch factory, which is supplied with starch and table potatoes by around 1,300 farms. AGRANA has a contractual partnership with these farmers, which guarantees the factory a secure supply of raw materials and provides the farmers with a guaranteed price. Both conventional and organic potatoes are processed.
