Theresa Kern received the award forher thesis entitled Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) ofinnovative agricultural systems with a focus on multi-output processes, addressing innovativeapproaches to sustainability assessments in the agricultural sector. She isinvestigating how the environmental impacts of agricultural processes can beassessed fairly when multiple crops, such as corn and straw, are grown at thesame time during cereal farming. Such processes test the limits of conventionalassessment methods. Her work highlights which methods are the most reliable andprovides evidence that innovative agricultural systems can yield considerableenvironmental advantages.

Christoph Rosinger received theAGRANA prize for his thesis on soil life in agricultural soils. Micro-organismsin the soil are key to nutrient supplies, the formation of humus and soilfertility, with Rosinger demonstrating that carbon in particular is oftenlacking as a nutrient. Soil-conserving steps, such as planting catch crops, organic fertilisation or less soil tillage can help significantly here. Hiswork combines fundamental microbiological mechanisms with practical approachesto facilitate resource-sensitive agricultural practices and therefore makes adirect contribution to sustainable agricultural and food systems.

“Through our research promotion prize, we aimto award young scientists who investigate agricultural questions of particularimportance to AGRANA”, stresses AGRANA COO Franz Ennser. “Both excellentstudies are closely linked to the issue of our sustainability goals –particularly with regard to efficient resource use, resilient agriculturalproduction systems and climate protection”, Ennser concludes.
