Highest quality standards

Always in focus: sustainability and quality management.

For AGRANA Zucker GmbH, as an industrial processor of sugar beet and raw sugar from sugar cane, sustainability is an integral part of our corporate philosophy  and is lived through the entire value chain, starting with the procurement of raw materials.

AGRANA defines sustainability as a harmonious balance of economic, environmental and social responsibility. In our core business, this means, we…

  • utilise almost 100% of our agricultural raw materials and use low-emission technologies to minimise impacts on
  • the environment, respect all our stakeholders and the communities where we operate,
  • engage in long-term partnerships with suppliers and customers.

Organic Sugar

Rightfully increasing in popularity: our organic sugar beet. Grown on fertile local soils and characterised by outstanding levels of quality. Thanks to the many years of experience and care taken by our growers.

Wiener Zucker’s organic sugar reflects environmentally-sensitive growing methods and sustainable agriculture. This is safeguarded by a strict monitoring system – extending from the field to the finished product. Our fine-grained organic crystallised sugar is an all-rounder in any kitchen and free of any unwanted taste sensations.

All our organic products are marked with the BIO AUSTRIA logo. The BIO AUSTRIA logo identifies organic food that meets the criteria of BIO AUSTRIA quality and thus goes beyond the legal requirements of the EU organic regulation.

Sustainable sugar production

Sustainability is firmly anchored in AGRANA’s corporate philosophy. And this applies in practice along the entire value-added chain – extending back to sourcing activities. We are making sugar beet growing in Austria fit for the future: With sustainability programmes which we develop in cooperation with farmers and customers.

Guaranteed GMO-free status in Austria

AGRANA sugar is guaranteed GMO-free – from the beet seeds to the Wiener Zucker finished product.  This is now certified by the compliance symbol (Ohne Gentechnik hergestellt) issued by ARGE Gentechnik-frei,  which, with immediate effect, is printed on the packaging of every Wiener Zucker product.

Before issuing the right to use this compliance symbol, experts authorised by ARGE Gentechnik-frei carefully checked end-to-end compliance with the strict criteria of the Austrian Food Code for GMO-free agriculture and food processing. This quality seal confirms the GMO-free status of the traditional Wiener Zucker brand along its entire value-added chain.

Sustainability for our packaging

We have decided to switch to exclusively using packaging which has been made of FSC-certified materials. This process has been ongoing since the summer of 2019, with all packaging materials for end-consumer products and also those sold in bags being successively changed to FSC-certified materials. We have also implemented many other measures related to the issue of sustainability:

  • Mainly paper and cartonboard-based packaging in as far as this provides sufficient product protection
  • Eliminating the use of aluminium
  • For reasons of product safety, primary packaging materials are always made of virgin fibre to ensure there is no risk of contamination from mineral oil.
  • Only recycled materials are used for tertiary packaging made of corrugated board.
  • Composite materials which are nearly free of plastics for sealing purposes (e.g. for sugar sticks and sachets and, in future, other products)
