ARIC: research and innovation from idea to application
Connecting science, technology and practice to develop products and processes for AGRANA and its partners.
Where AGRANA turns research into practice
The AGRANA Research & Innovation Center (ARIC) is AGRANA's central research and development center. ARIC operates as an independent company and a wholly owned subsidiary of AGRANA Beteiligungs-AG, based in Tulln since 1986. Interdisciplinary teams develop product innovations, new processes and technologies for food, agricultural and technical markets.
Our expertise spans raw material and, process technology, analytics and biotechnology. Pilot-scale facilities let us validate developments before they reach production. Our work spans AGRANA's plant-based raw material streams, from sugar and starch to fruit and bioethanol, and we also make our expertise available to external clients in Austria and abroad.
85 people
Interdisciplinary — spanning processtechnology, analytics and biotechnology.
€7.1 million
Annual R&D budget at ARIC — part of €15 million across the AGRANA Group.
107 patents
Filed from AGRANA's own research — the foundation for new products and processes.
From first idea to industrial scale
Seedmultiplication, cover-crops and field trials all center on sugar beet: the seeditself, the soil it grows in and the data behind each variety.
Product and process innovation
We develop new products, improve existing ones and explore technologies for processing and modifying renewable raw materials. Our research covers food and technical markets, and it addresses three questions: how a product behaves in use, how efficiently it can be manufactured and how the process itself can be improved.
We can reproduce many production steps at laboratory or pilot scale –assessing technologies, optimizing processes and generating the data needed for scale-up.

Application expertise
Research does not stop at the laboratory. Application testing shows how ingredients and technologies behave under realistic conditions and how they hold up in customer and production environments.
Our teams combine product development with application testing and support customers through implementation, in food and technical markets alike.

Agricultural research
ARIC also works on agricultural questions around AGRANA's plant-based raw materials: variety trials, soil and raw material analysis, and research into crop health, cultivation practices and raw material quality.
As a state-accredited laboratory, ARIC conducts official yield andquality testing of sugar beet.

Analytics and sensory expertise
Our analytical capabilities support research at every stage of development. In-house, we cover instrumental and chemical analytics, microbiology, application testing and sensory evaluation.
Our trained sensory panel assesses appearance, aroma, taste and AGRANA ingredients and finished products. These findings link measured data with the way a product is perceived in real use.

Research partnerships and Open Innovation
Innovation also draws on perspectives from outside AGRANA. ARIC works with universities, researchers, startups and other innovation partners, combining external ideas with our own research and technology know-how.
Direct access to AGRANA's value chains and production expertise lets us test promising concepts for practical viability and future application.
