Bioethanol for fuel, and neutral alcohol for food, pharma and industrial use
AGRANA produces ethanol from renewable raw materials at two integrated biorefinery sites: Pischelsdorf in Austria (Austria's largest bioethanol plant, opened in 2008) and Hungrana in Szabadegyháza, Hungary (a joint venture in which AGRANA holds a 50% stake). The combined production reach serves European fuel, industrial, healthcare and food markets from one operator base.
- Approximately 260,000 m³ of bioethanol per year from Pischelsdorf, sufficient to cover Austria's entire E10 blending demand
- Additional ~190,000 m³ per year from the Hungrana joint venture (maize, residue and waste-based)
- Alcohol content of 96% to 99.9 vol.%
- ISCC-EU certification at both sites, supporting RED III sustainability documentation
- Up to ~85% greenhouse gas reduction versus fossil fuels, rising to ~95% with waste and residue feedstocks
- Integrated biorefinery model with near-complete raw material utilization, generating protein-rich animal feed and biogenic CO₂ as co-products

Demand for ethanol is shaped by several converging pressures. Transport decarbonization policies are increasing renewable fuel use in Europe, while energy security concerns regarding the reliance on fossil fuel imports rise. At the same time, the healthcare sector continues to draw on ethanol as a solvent and antimicrobial active ingredient, and food, pharma, cosmetics and technical formulators add steady industrial demand alongside.
